Geostationary-Satellite Imagery Applications on Distributed, High-Performance Computing

چکیده
We discuss applications of high resolution geostationary satellite imagery and distributed high performance computing facilities for the storage, processing and delivery of satellite data products. We describe our system which is built on a distributed high performance computing environment using a number of software infrastructural building blocks and computational resources interconnected by an ATM-based broadband network. Distributed High Performance Computing hardware technology underpins our proposed system. In particular, we discuss the capabilities of a distributed hardware environment incorporating: high bandwidth communications networks such as Telstra’s Experimental Broadband Network (EBN); large capacity hierarchical storage systems; and high performance parallel computing resources. We also describe a recent demonstration of our project resources to the remote-sensing user community.

A Web-based Interface for On-Demand Processing of Satellite Imagery Archives
We describe a web-based control system for invoking pipelined processes on a large on-line archive of geostationary satellite imagery through a World Wide Web browser interface. Our archive of GMS5 satellite data is stored on a combined RAID and tape silo system, accessible from a cluster of ATM-connected DEC Alpha workstations in Adelaide and Canberra. Our system makes use of parallel and dist...

Thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing of landsurface temperature (LST) provides valuable information about the sub-surface moisture status required for estimating evapotranspiration (ET) and detecting the onset and severity of drought. While empirical indices measuring anomalies in LST and vegetation amount (e.g., as quantified by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index; NDVI) have demonstra...
